The first Spanish explorers in the new world were accompanied by scholar-priests. In the blossoms of these climbing

vimes they saw elaborate symbols of the passion of Christ – the three stigmas in the center represented nails, the five

stamens beneath them were Christ's wounds, the outer fringe was the crown of thorns, and the ten petal-like parts behind

the fringe were the apostles (not including Judas and Peter).
